great post! I have been researching wet shaving, and for Christmas, got my husband a set of vintage straight razors and brush/soap. He is currently using a merkur he got from amazon(they have a decent selection) but I just wanted to add that I found a 100% badger brush at Target, made by Shea Moisture, for about $10. It's a good, inexpensive brush for a beginner and seems to not have lost any bristles yet. Something to consider for those wanting to try out wet shaving.

Great post, I completely agree with you that to make the jump to wet shaving that the best investment to begin with is with a quality razor and ideally one that will last a lifetime. To help guys make the change I designed the Goodfella Safety Razor, it's a modern take on the classic but totally safe to use for newbies.

I very promptly whipped out my pen and paper to take notes on this. I was thoroughly impressed with the layout and detailed information. In the end i simply chose to print the page.

What a great post for anyone brand new to the art of wet shaving. I would like to comment on one thing that I've learned though, regarding the brushes. Most of the really cheap ones you find at Walgreens, or even nicer boutiques, use synthetic bristles that are assembled by machines. (I purchased a $30 brush from Ulta by a brand called Men-U - See here). The synthetic bristles are rougher to the touch and fall out easier. But you can find a really nice, handmade, pure badger-hair brush for under $100. I know that sounds like a lot, but it will last a lifetime. I just purchased one this weekend (See here) from "The Art of Shaving" store. And actually I still feel silly for buying it, but I think 10-20 years down the road I'll still be using it and happy I bought it.

Thanks again Caleb for spreading your awesome enthusiasm about the art of wet shaving. And maybe one day we'll reach the omega level of shaving with a straight razor YIKES!
